Current H1N1 and Denuge Situation

H1N1 Swine flu Situation in Belize:
BELMOPAN, Belize -- The Ministry of Health has reported that as of July 17, 2009, Belize has 22 confirmed cases of Influenza A H1N1. At least three of the latest cases are from Cayo, while the others are in the northern districts. These cases have presented with mild flu-like symptoms and have recovered.

The World Health Organization (WHO) report on disease outbreaks that occur throughout the world.

Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever Outbreack
BELMOPAN, Belize -- July 21, 2009. There’s a Dengue outbreak in the Cayo District. That’s what the Ministry of Health says after 114 cases appeared in that western district between May fourth and July fourteenth. And we don’t say “outbreak” casually. According to the Ministry, the spike in reported cases exceeds the expected number for this time of year. Couple that with the fact that these cases are all within the Cayo district and all that makes it into a full-fledged Dengue Outbreak.

Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System enter UNESCO’s Danger List

The World Heritage Committee meeting in Seville, under the chair of María Jesús San Segundo, Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of Spain to UNESCO, has decided to inscribe Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System on the List of World Heritage in Danger.

The main problem with Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System concerns mangrove cutting and excessive development in the property which was inscribed in 1996 as largest barrier reef in the northern hemisphere, with offshore atolls, several hundred sand cays, mangrove forests, coastal lagoons and estuaries.

While requesting stricter control of development on the site, the Committee also requested that the moratorium on mangrove cutting on the site which expired in 2008 be reinstated.

The following is a statement by Erika Harms on the decision:

"The preservation of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System is critical to both its marine inhabitants and the local communities that depend on the site for their livelihoods. In light of the Committee's decision, we recommit ourselves to support long-term solutions to the conservation challenges in the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System World Heritage site."

Belize suffers Power outages for the next four months

Belize will suffers Power outages for the next four months

BEL warns that starting on Friday, May 8, Mexican power provider CFE is cutting it off for four months. It’s nothing personal, apparently the Mexican power company has experienced damage to major generating equipment in Campeche.

During the dry season, BEL gets more than half of its peak power from CFE. So, the only good news is that the rainy season is around the bend. But until then the company will have to juggle available sources of power to compensate for the shortfall. It urges consumers to conserve power.

This outage not only affects the Light and the AC. There are many hidden electrical, systems as: Water pumps, Gas pumps, Cordless Phone Basic Stations, Microwaves, DSL and Cable TV Routers on the power poles. Even when you have a generator your internet and the TV will be dead.

Prepare your self, with stocking batteries, gas and caned food.

Current Swine Flue Situation in Central America and Belize

WHO raises swine flu alert to level 4 of 6

The WHO raised its pandemic alert level to phase 4 over the deadly swine flu virus, indicating a significant increased risk of a pandemic, a global outbreak of a serious disease.

Important if you stay or travel to Belize: Inform you self, stay calm and be prepared

Mexican officials are asking citizens to avoid large crowds, refrain from kissing and shaking hands and maintain a distance of at least six feet from each other amid growing concern over new cases of suspected and confirmed swine flu infection. Mexicans are thronging to local hospitals and temporary emergency clinics for treatment and testing. Mexico City municipal police have been spotted bearing automatic weapons in the country’s capital as emotions begin to rise in the body public. Many citizens have taken to wearing surgical masks in order to avoid contagion.

With several Buses, Cars and Planes traveling every day from Mexico City to Chetumal and Cancun we have to be very careful because this are transfer destinations for many Belize Visitors and just a few miles next to our Border.

“Belizeans going to Mexico? What we are highly recommending is that you go unless it is a case of emergency. ( Dr. Paul Edwards, Epidemiologist, 27.April 2009 on www.7newsbelize.com )

Treatment

The US CDC says that two flu drugs, Relenza and Tamiflu seem effective against the swine flu. Both drugs must be taken early, within a few days of the onset of symptoms, to be most effective.

Current Swine Flu Situation in Central America

The neighboring countries of Mexico, Guatemala and Belize are taking preventative measures. Guatemala has set up a clinic at its Guatemala City La Aurora International Airport (GUA) to treat symptoms. Nearby Honduras, El Salvador, and Costa Rica have also taken measures, while Nicaragua has halted the importing of food products made from pork. Eating pork has yet to be linked to contracting swine flu.

Current Swine flu Situation in Guatemala: Spanish news agency EFE claims there have been no reported cases of swine flu in Guatemala, but the nation has ordered tighter "epidemiological" control of its northern border with Mexico.

Swine flu Situation in Belize: There have been no documented cases of swine flu in Belize, and the Belize Agricultural Health Authority has not yet issued any official notice.
